How Surveillance Capitalism does it:
Let’s take images as an example. Photos you upload to Facebook will have data scraped off them. This is known as ‘residual data’. What this means is that whilst you own the photo, and Facebook cannot do anything with the actual visual image, what they can do is scrap data from the surface of it by running facial recognition algorithms to determine your mood, and eventually promoting relevant things.
A similar approach is taken for voice recordings.
The aim of this project is to allow you to experience how these algorithms work. When viewing visual data, such as photos uploaded to social media, or listening to voice recordings, it’s up to you to decide how the subject may be feeling, how they may behave, and base your inferences off this residual data.
